There are a handful of places in Houston that I cannot live without. There's a cafe that makes the best pork belly snuggies in town. There's a home baker who makes an Oreo so mean, I'll never buy the packaged ones again. There's a food truck that specializes in Japanese-style hand rolls. And I want to tell everyone about all of my favorite places all of the time. So every once in a while, I'm going to feature my local favorites.
Today, I wanted to feature one of my all-time favorites: Macaron by Patisse. When I first moved to Houston, I was pretty shocked to find that french macarons were hard to come by. I had been noshing on these treats for years in New York (and even in Cleveland!). But somehow, I could not find any delicious macarons in Houston. And don't even ask me about making my own. I tried. Once. It was terrible. (Note: I know, I know! I have to try again...)
But one unbearably humid day, I passed by the River Oaks Area, only to find that a Macaron store was Coming Soon! I nearly passed out from the excitement (and heat). So, every week, I passed by to see if the store had opened. And finally, it opened. I stopped by on opening day and must have tried 4-5 flavors, just standing in the shop. Delicious flavors. Chewy texture. The best macarons in Houston.
My favorite flavors? Lavender White Chocolate, Pistachio, Cappucino Dark Chocolate, and Rose. If you happen to be in the area, you need to go ASAP. Not only are the macarons flavorful, but the shop itself is easy on the eyes!
The lovely owner of Macaron by Patisse, Sukaina, was generous enough to take some time from her crazy busy schedule and answer a couple questions.
Your Name: Sukaina Rajani
How did you get started? To be honest, I wasn't much of a baker until I moved to Houston. It was a way to keep myself occupied while I was looking for a job.
I know it's not fair to ask this (it's like asking 'who's your favorite child?' ... But what is your favorite flavor? You're right - so not fair... I'd say my absolutely always go-to flavor is the fig & goat cheese. And then the lavender white chocolate, pistachio, cappuccino dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and pumpkin spice are tied... Oh and gingerbread!
What is the most exciting part about what you do? The most exciting part about what I do is the clients that I engage with. People of all walks of life come into the shop and have shared so many of their fabulous experiences with me. Furthermore, customizing flavors and macarons: it's instant gratification when I see the look on their faces after they've seen their order.
What is your favorite thing about Houston? The abundance of opportunity and the feeling of community in such a large city. Yet, the loving nature of everyone around me.
